INeedCoffee Article Tips and Guidelines

by Michael Allen Smith

Are you thinking about submitting a contribution to INeedCoffee? Excellent. Since April 1999 INeedCoffee has published numerous contributions from coffee fans and professionals. This page is to give guidance on that process.

Contribution Email

Please read the checklist below. It should answer most questions. Once you have, send your contribution and contributor information to email.

Contribution Checklist

  1. Has your idea been done? If no, great! If so, your contribution should be better or different than the original.
  2. Send us information for your Contributor Page. See the full list here.
    • Type your name exactly as you would like it to appear on your contributor page. Spelling is important.
    • Give us text or photos for this page. The information can be simple or more creative.
    • You may provide links to your personal or corporate site.
    • Displaying your email address is optional. INeedCoffee uses ASCII masking to reduce SPAM. It has been highly effective.
  3. Send the actual contribution.
    • This can be in raw text, RTF or Word.
    • If it is a reprint that appears on another website, you can send the URL.
      • July 2007 UPDATE: We are NOT interested in reprints that have already appeared on one of the free article directory sites. If you have any questions on this point, ask us.
    • If you send us a Word document and there are images or graphs embedded inside the document, please also send them as separate attachments.
  4. Tell us the title of the contribution. We often get submissions that have everything but a title.
    • The best titles are unique. Do an internet search on title ideas before naming your contribution.
  5. Include Images, Images, Images.
    • INeedCoffee articles have pictures.
    • Don't worry about giving us too large of an image. If an image is too large for us to use, we will reduce it's size.
    • JPG and GIF are the ideal formats.
  6. If you wish to share in the ad revenue for your contributions, send us your Google AdsenseID. Details here. This is optional.
  7. Joining the Friends of INeedCoffee is the LAST step and it is optional.

Contribution Tips

The following tips are here to make your contribution as good as it can be.

Brewing and Roasting Tutorials

When writing a tutorial on brewing or roasting it's best to be as detailed as possible. Don't assume the reader knows anything. If the topic is of an advanced nature, make sure that is clear from the beginning. Good tutorials will have step-by-step directions. Each step will have a photograph. If the photograph is unclear, it will be marked up with additional writing. Since it's also possible for the reader to mess up following a tutorial, it is also a good idea to anticipate possible errors and address them in the article. Below are some tutorial examples.

Roasting Coffee in a Popcorn Popper
Cold Brewed Coffee on the Cheap
Press Pot Tutorial

Recipes

A well written coffee-based recipe will include an introduction, list of ingredients, step-by-step instructions and a photograph of the finished product. Not all the recipes on INeedCoffee have photos. The ones that do receive the most page views. A photograph of a completed recipe is what sells it to the reader. Recipes without photos are far less likely to be printed out and carried into the kitchen. Below are some recipe examples:

Lola's Cinnamon Syrup Iced Coffee
An Espresso-Based Frozen Drink
Great Infusions Barista CoffeeCup Cookie

Health, History, and Agriculture

The more academic articles should include references to back up the article. Below are some academic examples.

The Story of the Bialetti Moka Express
How Functional Coffee Can Help You Attain Fitness and Weight Loss
Role of Antibiotics in Coffee Plantation Ecology

Coffee on the Road

Anyone that likes coffee can write a Coffee on the Road. The premise is simple. Find a theme about your hometown or the place your vacationing. Become part of the coffee scene. Take pictures. Now blend it all together in an article. This is not a review like you would find in a local paper. Think of it as showing someone around your town and you'll hit a few coffee places on the way. Photos are essential. Below are some Coffee on the Road examples.

Coffee on the Road - Grand Circle
Coffee on the Road - Washington DC Metro
Coffee on the Road - Los Cabos, Mexico

Artwork and Photography

Many artists and photographers make their living with their work. It's therefore important to include as much information about the work on the contribution. What size is the painting? What medium did the artist use? Where and when was the photograph taken? Is there a direct link to a larger image where the piece can be purchased? The most important thing to include with artwork is a title. Search engines are lousy at looking at images for meaning. It's best to include a description to reach a wider audience. Below are some examples.

Java Goddess
Implement No. 1
Coffee Photography From PhotoDude

Poetry

We prefer not to have short submissions. Ideally the user should see a full page. If the poetry is short, we advise sending more than one. Adding photography and artwork is also encouraged. Below are some examples.

8 Minutes
Living For the Mornings part 2
Poems To Sip By: The Musings of A Coffee Freak

Everything Else

When thinking up a topic to write about, try and make sure that we don't already have an article on that topic. We don't need another article on Fair Trade or water quality. The best way to see if a topic has already been covered is to use our search engine or go to Google and add "site:ineedcoffee.com" to your search.

Topic Ideas

As of this writing (November 2006) we need articles and tutorials on the following topics.

  • Brewing Tutorials for the most of single-serve machines that have flooded the market in recent years. If you sell these machines writing a tutorial is a good business idea.
  • Commercial roasting tutorial. In the 7+ years of INeedCoffee, we've been promised a commercial roasting tutorial at least 10 times. No one has ever delivered.
  • Home roasting tutorials. In the last few years several new machines have hit the market. Our readers would love to see how easy it is to roast before they buy one.
  • Coffee on the Road. It's a big planet and we've got about 10 COTR guides. There is a lot more ground to cover.
  • Everybody loves comics.
  • Detailed coffee history. We don't need another coffee history overview. We need articles that go deeper on a specific coffee topic. Any history students out there?

Topic Mentors

If you are considering writing an article or tutorial and need topic specific guidance, many of our contributors can help. Feel free to contact them directly for assistance.
