Home / Cafe Culture / (cigarette smoke and coffee)
(oh and don't tell me i say it funny)
stale scent lingers on your clothes
(on your breath, and i, even so far
away as this can smell it clearly)
you walk in with a bounce in your step
(i guess cigarettes have that effect, since
the coffee still appears too hot to drink)
you take your seat beside me
proudly bearing textbook,notebook,pen,purse,smell
(but no words of good morning, hello, how are you
no smile, not even a nod. i guess my comfy pants
can't compete with your fitted jeans and my low-cal
fruit juice is nothing next to your four dollar cup of
steaming aromalicious coffe - sweet and low and skim?)
and now with each sip, the aroma of freshly brewed beans reaches my nose as well
(nicotine and caffeine
smoke and steam)
as the aroma seeps from the cardboard
(carried perhaps by the heat that seeks to
defeat the drafts of this cool october morning)
i wonder, will the heat from your drink spread far
enough to warm my hands as well?
(and then my lips
my throat
my heart)
or is even that little bit of sharing too much to ask?
(i sure as hell don't want the leftover
scent of your morning cigarette -
or should i make that plural?)
i hope it makes you happy
(your cigarette smoke and coffee)
