Home / Cafe Culture / coffee cornerby Lura Lee This site review was from September 2000. Name: coffee corner The Rise of the Web LogIn case you haven't heard, there is a new web phenomenon: weblogging (a.k.a. blogging). Web logs are usually updated daily and are maintained by one person or a small group of people. Some web logs are topic driven, some are personal. Having a daily blog dedicated to coffee is a brilliant idea. I wish we'd thought of this one, but we didn't, so we tip our hat to the people who did. Therefore, this month's INeedCoffee site of the month award goes out to coffee corner - a web log dedicated to four people's ongoing pursuit and enjoyment of coffee.
Mike's storyMike is an admitted coffee addict. He explains that he grew up around New Orleans-style coffee, flavored with chicory. He began drinking at age 11 and at the high point of his addiction he admits that he "couldn't go 20 minutes in a coffee shop without seeing somebody [he] knew." Mike is the leader of this caffeine-driven Rat Pack. His preferred drink is the quad-shot grande americano. He currently works as a web developer in Houston. Chris' storyChris is a 3rd year medical student at the University of Louisville medical school. He uses the coffee to keep him alert during surgery rotations. Chris explains that he learned that black coffee is best from his mother. He thinks that black coffee keeps life simpler. Stephen's storyStephen uses coffee as his drug of choice, explaining that it is "legal amphetamines." He and Chris attended the same grade-school. He grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and spent many hours hanging around coffee shops in Lexington with the gang. Amy's storyAmy has a more virtual link to the group. Though she and Mike have never met in person, she's been in Mike's email circle of friends for years. She takes her coffee with cream, no sugar. She doesn't usually like to mix sweets with coffee, except for the occasional coffee-related recipe. Notable blog quotes:
Tools of the TradeIf you are interested in starting your own web log, there are tools that will make it immeasurably easier for you. The most notable of the blogging tools is Blogger.com. The tool does the FTP work for you once you've properly set up your account. It works like this: sign up, start a weblog, update ad nauseum from any web connection. You'll be able to create a weblog easily, but keep in mind that in order to make it look good you'll need to learn a little HTML. Strengths and WeaknessesThe strength of the coffee corner blog is that it is voyeuristic fun. It is updated almost daily. You can view other people's coffee trials and travels. The only negative point about the blog is a long URL that is very difficult to memorize. They should buy their own domain name (www.something.com), so that we can all access it easily. Also, I hope that they'll make a commitment to blog frequently, since I need my daily fix. INeedCoffee.com is pleased to highlight an excellent web log idea, and we're proud to offer coffee corner the September 2000 Site of the Month award. (10/1/2000) UPDATE - Coffee Corner now owns a new friendly URL: coffeecorner.org |
